CVOR-Commercial Vehicle Operators Registration
Commercial vehicle operators in Ontario must have a valid Commercial Vehicle Operator’s Registration (CVOR) certificate and carry a copy. Carriers that operate certain types of vehicles require a CVOR certificate, including commercial motor vehicles that are plated in Ontario, the U.S. or Mexico.
These vehicles include:
Trucks with a gross weight or registered gross weight over 4,500 kg, buses with a seating capacity of 10 or more passengers, tow trucks Regardless of gross weight or registered gross weight. Vehicles plated in other Canadian provinces or territories don’t need a CVOR certificate.
They require a Safety Fitness Certificate from the province or territory in which the vehicle is plated.
As of October 1, 2013, the Ontario Ministry of Transportation has begun a series of changes to the application process for obtaining a CVOR.
New applicants now must complete and pass a knowledge test in person at a local drive test location. This test will cost $32.00, and the only people qualified to complete the test are an owner, sole proprietors, partners, corporate officers or a director of the corporation.
